Accessories Haul – Taobao

One of the few perks about living in China, is that we get to buy from TAOBAO, the online retail giant of the east.

TAOBAO is definitely one of my favorite things about China (materialistic much? I don’t care, ’cause it’s the truth). This site is like the Chinese version of ebay (individual vendors can offer their products on the site) but without the bidding, super fast shipping (most times) and with infinite amounts of products available.

It can be a little overwhelming at first, because first, it’s all in Chinese, and there is just SO MANY things! So for us poor little expats trying to buy from Taobao by ourselves, it can get a little tricky. You can only buy directly from the site is you are located in China, or some nearby countries, sorry.

If you do live in China though, my advice would be to always have your Google translate tab open when buying from Taobao, even if you think your Chinese is good, and to have a Chinese friend with you at least for the first time (make it someone special, tisktisk).

Anyway, this is not the first time I get something from Taobao, but it’s the first time I get something with my own China card! It was incredibly difficult setting up the card for online payments, but I’m lucky enough to have an awesome co-worker that pretty much set it up for me (thanks Jackie!).

Here’s some of the things I got:

Taobao es definitivamente una de mis cosas favoritas en China (aunque suene mal, es la verdad). Esta página es como la versión China de Ebay (así que personas individuales pueden ofrecer sus productos en el sitio), sólo que sin las subastas, con envío super rápido (la mayoría de las veces) y con cantidades infinitas de productos. 

Al principio puede ser un poco abrumador tratar de comprar aquí, primero que todo porque esta TODO en chino, y literalmente hay millones de cosas que ver! Por eso recomiendo, que si van a comprar aquí siempre tengan un tab abierto con Google Translate, y pedirle a un amigo que sepa Chino full que te ayude, al menos la primera vez. Cabe mencionar que sólo se pude comprar directamente en Taobao si vives en China o en algunos países de los alrededores (lo siento, yo no hago las reglas).

Aunque esta no es la primera vez que compro en Taobao, sí es la primera vez que compro con mi propia tarjeta China, lo cual fue un enredo total porque había que setear la tarjeta para pagos en línea. Es un proceso super largo, pero por suerte una de mis compañeras de trabajo se apiadó de mí y me arregló todo.

I got everything you see here for under $8 USD (47 yuan) including shipping. Sounds awesome right? but I must say though, it is not all fun and games (I love saying that). I paid less than 1 kuai (0.15 cents) for most of the rings and around 6-7 kuai ($1USD) for each necklace, so of course it’s not the best quality.

For example, the “blogger necklace” I got (I call  it that ’cause I’ve seen it on so many bloggers haha) it was not the best purchase, and it shall never be worn during the day because it looks like a toy necklace. So I will only be using that for going out to a club where it is very dark and you cannot tell how cheap my accessories really are! haha

 Todo lo que ven aquí lo compré por menos de $8 dólares incluyendo el envío. Suena increíble, no? Pues no tanto. Pero es entendible digo, por la mayoría de los anillos pagué alrededor de .15 centavos, y por los collares alrededor de un dólar. Obviamente, no todo iba a ser perfecto por ese precio. Por lo menos el collar que le puse “blogger necklace” (lo llamé así por que se lo he visto a un montón de bloggers haha) nunca podrá ser usado durante el día por que parece de esos collares de juguete que te dan en las canastitas de cumpleaños. Así que sólo lo usaré para ir a discos muy oscuras donde nadie pueda ver lo baratos que son mis accesorios! haha
